Welcome home to a piece of Madison history.

It all began with an idea in 2012. The Heirigs family, Madison natives, purchased the former Madison Elementary school with the dream of expanding the availability of modern living spaces for their hometown residents.

Washington Elementary School is part of the national historical register. After outgrowing Madison's first school building, Washington School was built in 1924 to house kindergarten through eighth grade and operated for the city until 2008, when the new school was built.

Matthew, a licensed architect, designed 17 unique spaces with the help of a local Sioux Falls architecture firm. Within two years, Washington Lofts opened in 2012 and all 17 units have been fully rented - often with a waitlist.

The brick building an excellent example of the standard school design commonly built in South Dakota in the 1920s. It maintains its historic division of interior space, as you’ll notice special elements like the chalkboard/corkboard closets, skylights, classroom doors, and some original flooring. Other than replacement windows, the building retains all of its original exterior materials to this day.

Tom Heirigs, owner and veterinarian at Twin Lakes Animal Clinic, passed away on August 16, 2020. Tom was a beloved caretaker of the Lofts. His sons Matthew and Danny, and daughter-in-law Beth, lovingly maintain the apartments to this day.
